Next week`s Budget announcement by chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling should help restore confidence among consumers and businesses across the UK, according to a major trade body.
Recent and proposed tax changes are causing international business to question the UK`s position as the location of choice, the British Bankers` Association (BBA) claimed.
The Budget must also help those consumers affected by the recent credit crunch, as well as those currently in the midst of debt problems and an uncertain looking property market, the BBA`s chief executive Angela Knight said.
She added: "Banking is already the largest single taxpayer and contributes more than £50 billion to the economy.
"It is seriously concerned that the government is trying to raise new taxes without adequate consultation and without proper consideration of the cumulative effects."
Mr Darling`s first Budget will be delivered on March 12th 2008.
