More than two thirds of British people use credit cards to pay off debts, according to new statistics.
The area of the UK most reliant on credit cards is the south-east, where 75 per cent use credit cards as a form of debt management - compared with the national average of 67 per cent, figures from UK payments association APACS show.
While publishing a new set of guidelines to help consumers with online payments, APACS statistics show that people in the north-east of the UK are less likely to use credit cards.
Adults in the north-west are more likely to use cash machines than elsewhere in the UK, while people in Scotland are less likely to use telephone or internet banking.
Sandra Quinn, director of communications at APACS, said: "While the national statistics show that as a nation we are generally comfortable with the many types of payment methods available and good at managing our finances, there is always room for improvement."
APACS represents 87 per cent of the UK payments industry.
