Money is the biggest single concern on the minds of the British public, new research shows.
Over 3.4 million Britons say that financial issues, including debts, are of great concern to them, with 18 per cent of those polled worrying about finances on a daily basis, a survey by Alliance and Leicester found.
The worries, however, fluctuate over the calendar year, with over half of those polled saying that the run up to Christmas and New Year is the most stressful time financially. To cope with such situations, 62 per cent cut back on luxuries, while 37 per cent sell unwanted goods.
Andy Bayes, head of current accounts at Alliance and Leicester, said: "Money is obviously a topic at the forefront of most people`s minds. Regardless of whether money worries stem from managing day-to-day finances or finding the money in the run up to special times of the year, it`s crucial people check that their bank account is working hard for them."
Figures released by Credit Action showed that the average British consumer is £8,856 in debt, excluding mortgages.
