More than £1,000 is spent by the average single person during the course of the year on dating and related activities, according to new research.
A MoneyExpert.com study indicates that a typical British singleton spends £88.24 a month looking for love.
Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert.com, said that people`s expectations for what makes an acceptable date have been raised.
"The modern singleton must be prepared to fork out hundreds of pounds to find love as people get ever more extravagant in their expectations - and their spending," he remarked.
"It might come as something of a shock to the system if you sit down and identify exactly how much of your income you spend on dates and nights out."
The survey also reveals that the north-south divide also seems to apply to romantic spending - couples in London spend an average of £108.30 each month, while those in Scotland pay less than £50.
And the spending may not stop once love is found; recent research from moneysupermarket.com states that the average couple planning their wedding will borrow nearly £8,500.
