In a move which could encourage consumers to accrue more debt, Barclaycard is considering imposing a £20 fee on people who do not use their credit cards enough.
Such a charge could affect up to one million customers, the BBC reports.
"We will do everything we can to improve the deal we give people, encourage them to use our card, not someone else`s and avoid fees," a Barclaycard spokesman told the news provider.
"As a last resort, we are considering a fee for a minority of customers that simply do not use their card," he added.
The move follows a similar decision by Lloyds TSB in February to levy a £35 fee on 50,000 customers who used their cards infrequently.
At the time, Sandra Quinn, spokesperson for UK payments association Apacs, told Channel 4`s News at Noon that the bank is not trying to encourage debt problems but was merely responding to financial trends.
