June saw a 1.2% boost in UK retail sales, according to new statistics, suggesting that consumers` cautious outlook in recent months may be improving.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that sales were also 2.9% higher than in June 2008.
The increase was largely caused by higher clothes sales due to the hot summer weather, according to the ONS.
A spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington said: "There is an obvious seasonal effect on retail sales at this time of year, but the rise in sales may also indicate that fewer consumers are concerned about the risk of debt in the current financial climate.
"Although there are signs that the economy may be recovering, we do advise consumers to remain cautious and avoid getting into debt where possible. Nobody can predict what will happen over the next few months, so it pays to be careful."
