Millions of consumers in the UK are in debt to their energy suppliers, it has been claimed.
Figures produced by uSwitch.com suggest that a total of around 6.5 million households are in such a situation.
According to the price comparison site, the average amount owed has risen from £114 last year to £126 now. This is an increase of 11 per cent.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "Despite energy prices now starting to fall, almost a third of direct debit households have only started to feel the impact of last year`s price hikes within the last few months."
She went on to say that as well as raising concerns over affordability, this also suggests that energy debt is likely to rise as many households will be "playing catch up".
In total, consumers in the UK are said to be £820 million in debt to energy suppliers.
Research conducted recently by AXA found that 20 per cent of people polled were concerned they would not be able to pay off their immediate debts.
