English council tax forecast to rise by 3%

26 February 2009

Council tax in England is forecast to rise by 3% on average this year - the lowest rise in ten years.

The figure is down from the previous forecast of 3.5%, but is still likely to be higher than the rate of inflation, which is widely expected to be negative in the near future.

The rise would be equivalent to an extra 79p per week, according to the BBC, or around £3.40 per month.

A spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington said: "Council tax payers are likely to welcome the fact that the rise in council tax is lower than usual, especially in these difficult times.

"However, people already struggling with their costs may find even a 3% rise difficult to deal with. Anyone who finds themselves in this situation should ensure that they speak to a debt adviser to discuss their options."
