Debt advice a ‘key area’ of debt management strategy

5 February 2009

A new plan has been launched to help people in Wales deal with debt, the downturn and financial exclusion.

“Taking Everyone into Account” – the Financial Inclusion Strategy for Wales – was launched for public consultation at a high school in Cardiff by Dr Brian Gibbons, the Minister for Social Justice and Local Government.

Currently a draft strategy, it lays down the ways in which the Welsh Assembly Government intends to work with other organisations to ‘promote financial inclusion and tackle over-indebtedness’.

Its five key areas, according to new.wales.gov.uk, are: access to mainstream financial services; affordable credit and savings; access to money and debt advice; helping people to improve their financial skills; and to maximise their income.

“We are fully committed to tackling financial exclusion and over-indebtedness in Wales,” said Dr Gibbons.

“Helping people gain the skills and confidence to manage their money is particularly important,” he continued. “We want to see all our citizens having access to affordable financial products and the confidence and capability to use them safely and responsibly.”
