Today is expected to be the busiest day of the year for online shopping, according to internet trade body IMRG.
This year, the UK’s Christmas online retail sales could reach almost £14 billion – and the peak shopping hour is expected to be between 13:00 and 14:00 today, as people do their Christmas shopping online at their desks. In all, web-users are expected to spend £320 million today.
Online retailer Play.com is expecting sales to peak today, with sales 25% higher than last year.
“Using the internet can be a great way to save money and stay out of debt,” said a spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington, “as shopping online can make it much easier to shop around and find bargains.
“It can also save shoppers money in other ways. For example, it can save them having to take time off to get the shopping done during the week – as many people are put off by the thought of the crowds in the shops on the final few weekends in the run-up to Christmas.
“Even so, there’s always the danger that online shopping can make it too easy for people to spend more than they can afford. Anyone determined to stay out of debt should keep a close eye on their spending while they’re online.”
