Get professional help negotiating credit card debt

12 October 2009

Because they typically carry a high interest rate, credit card debts can be particularly worrying if you`re struggling to meet your debt repayments.

It`s been estimated that the average credit card rate is currently around 18% - much higher than average interest rates on some other forms of debt, such as personal loans.

That means if you miss credit card debt repayments, your debt could grow very quickly. But it doesn`t have to get to that point. If you think you`re going to struggle with your repayments - or if you`ve already started struggling - it`s important that you get help as soon as possible.

Why does debt grow?

Under normal circumstances (i.e. when you are meeting all your repayments), debt does not `grow` as such - you will be paying interest on top of what you have borrowed, but your monthly repayments will cover this.

If you miss payments, however, you will still be charged interest. This means you`ll owe more than you did after your last payment.

Miss more than one payment, and your debt will grow even more - and over time it could begin to `snowball`, meaning you could soon find your debt becomes unmanageable.

Get debt help early

If your credit card debts - or any other debts, for that matter - are getting out of control, then finding the right debt solution is essential. You should contact a professional debt adviser at the first sign of problems.

A debt adviser will discuss your situation in confidence to help you work out the best way of clearing your debts. They may feel that re-organising your finances or cutting back on unnecessary costs could improve your situation, or if that`s not enough they may recommend a debt solution that could help.
