Don`t struggle alone - get help with debt

24 July 2009

When you`re struggling with debt, it`s easy to feel like you`re alone with your problems. Many people find themselves constantly worrying about how they are ever going to clear their debts.

However, there is help available. A professional debt adviser can offer guidance and information on ways of getting out of debt, including a range of debt solutions that are designed to help you get out of debt - perhaps sooner than you realise.

When do I need debt help?

In general, if you are struggling to meet your debt repayments each month, you`ll know that you have a problem. But even for people who are managing for now, there are signs that could indicate a potential problem. Some of these may include:

  • You have credit card or overdraft balances that are not going down.
  • You constantly find yourself running out of money long before you are paid.
  • You have missed one or more debt repayments in the past few months.

If any of these apply to you, you should take extra care with your finances and do whatever you can to ensure that your situation begins to improve. If you do start to really struggle, though, do not hesitate to speak with an expert debt adviser.

How can a debt adviser help me?

Firstly, a debt adviser will need to know a few things about your situation: how much you owe, how much you can afford to pay each month, how much you spend on essential costs, etc. Based on this information, they can recommend the best course of action for your circumstances.

In some cases, this might only mean taking a look at your own finances. For example, creating a budget - in which you put aside enough to cover all your essential costs, leaving a certain amount that you know is safe to spend as you wish - could make a big difference to your ability to manage your debts.

Of course, this won`t work for everyone. Some people simply don`t have a high enough income to cover all their debt repayments - in which case a specific debt solution, such as a debt management plan, may be appropriate.
